THE NEVER-ENDING CLIMB

Photography by Seamus Gilmore

This collection was inspired by the insanity and restrictiveness of pursuing perfection and elitism. My inspiration started with the competitive aspect of fashion. Working along so many creative minds in school, I found myself wanting to be "the best" in my classes. Yet the idea of being the best is a ridiculous, if not an impossible notion. Thus this development of the concept of the never ending climb to the nonexistent top. I chose M.C. Escher's "Relativity" to illustrate this idea and used it as a pattern for the collection.

In terms of construction and the pleating details, I pulled inspiration from medieval knight armor and school uniforms as both represent people associated with exclusivity. Knights are specifically chosen for a knighthood and follow a strict code, while private schools are known for having a competitive atmosphere and a sense of elitism. This collection presents a very structured and simple silhouette while containing an intricate and chaotic scene of perpetual action, thus sending a message about the never-ending climb to perfection.
